Forum Archive

You're at the forum archive. The forums were taken down years ago due to some unfortunate astroturfing attempts by a couple retailers. At the time, I was very concerned about exposing readers to a bunch of input-that-might-be-fake, or creating a situation where the well-behaved retailers were at a disadvantage.

However, because a number of readers had posted helpful comments & reviews, and I didn't want to see it all vanish into oblivion permanently, I kept a backup around. What you're seeing now is that backup (almost 7 years old now - don't ask how I managed to get it running again...). Things are a bit scattered, and you can't post anything new (the buttons have all been disabled), but the original content is here if you're interested.

You may want to either scroll down a bit or use the Section Menu to skip the first few posts, since the first posts were largely related to registering (which is obviously no longer possible).

Q: The website already has a lot of information. Why add forums?
A: Forums are a great place for others to share their experiences. I've received quite a few emails from people with both good and bad experiences. Rather than attempting to integrate them into the website itself (which would be time consuming and extremely limiting), forums are a much better solution.

Q: Do I have to register to post?
A: No. However, if spam and/or abuse become a problem, this could change.
UPDATE: Due to spam/abuse (surprise surprise), registration is now required. Please send me an email in addition to registering so that I know it's "you" and not a bot trying to register

Q: I put together a full-fledged review complete with pictures, similar to the reviews on the website. Will you host it?
A: Yes I usually will. Simply send email to eyeglassretailerreviews@gmail.com. I recommend posting about your experiences in addition to the review.

I am very interested to know if online-glasses companies get the prescriptions and PD-distances correct. If you've checked your online glasses at a local optometrist please reply to this message to let me know if the prescription was correct or not! Thanks very much.

If you want to get your glasses checked at an optometrist try not to tell them where you got the glasses from (they'll get grumpy if they know you purchased online). Also tell them that you left your prescription at home - and ask them if they could right down the prescription of the glasses so that you can compare that with your prescription when you get home. That way you'll get 100% honest answers from the Optometrist. They shouldn't charge you for doing this, but if they do, it won't be very much. They have a machine that can find out the prescription of your glasses very quickly.

I have purchased glasses from Zennioptical and from 39dollar glasses recently. I'm suspicious that the lenses are not the right prescription for me so I'm going to get them checked out by a local optometrist and will post the results on this website after I do that.

Unfortunately, the forums have been hit by spam-bots twice in one week. Banning the IP's hasn't had much of an effect, and while I do try to keep on top of spam/etc, I quite honestly don't have the time needed to monitor the boards 24/7 (or to the extent needed to keep them spam free) . Being able to post without registering was great while it lasted, but alas, the time has come for it to end.

Therefore, as of now, registration is required to post. If you have some great input but don't want to register for whatever reason, feel free to contact me at eyeglassretailerreviews@gmail.com, and I'll stick it up here or on the site. I'd also of course suggest passing along your experiences to others on local bulletin boards you may already be registered at to help them out with their own purchase decisions.

Thanks again, and sorry for the inconvenience of now having to register to post.

After registering, you MUST EMAIL ME at eyeglassretailerreviews@gmail.com before your account will be activated. Something to the effect of "Hi. My username is User123 (or whatever your username is). Please activate my account on the forums" is sufficient.

This is being done because of bots that auto-register themselves. I now have to manually activate each account, but since I usually get 10-20 bots trying to register each day, I need a way to distinguish real users from the bots. Sending me a short email with your username allows me to do this.

Again, after registering, send an email to eyeglassretailerreviews@gmail.com and put your username somewhere in the email, and I'll activate your account.

Thanks, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Can anyone recommend a place to order cheap sunglasses with frames that look like sunglasses (as opposed to just tinting lenses in regular frames)? Someone mentioned heavyglare.com in another thread, but their prices aren't exactly cheap.

Thanks!

globaleyeglasses.com - click "RxSunglasses" - frame + lens + shipping for about $40

I just received a pair of prescription sunglasses from them and am very happy. I chose the "F-Track 317-Black" frame. I have high astigmatism and have been told for years (by Lenscrafters, Pearle, etc.) that I cannot have a wrap-style frame, that my vision would be distorted by the wrap. GlobalEyeglasses fit my prescription into a wrap-style frame and I can see perfectly.

I will send a review with pictures to the admin, which you can read shortly (assuming I get it to him promptly, and he makes it available).

Has anyone found any on-line sites that sell frames with cable temples? (Those are the flexible temple pieces that hook behind your ears.)

FramesDirect.com sells the ArtCraft Art-Bilt line. These are classic metal frames that have been around for decades. The Art-Bilt Ful-Vue model is available with cable temples and several sizes of lens and bridge.
I've had 4 pairs of these. The last frame was not made as well as all the previous - off-shore sourcing perhaps? It's still a good frame for the money, though.

A couple of discounts that hit my email box recently:

MyOpticalShop.com - 10% off everything - expires 12/31 - no discount code required

EyeBuyDirect.com - Buy one $39 95 frame, get one free from the metal or plastic categories (which I think range from $14.95 to $29.95) - expires 01/01/07 - use code "Christmas2006"

I have about $500 left in my 2006 FSA. Just visited the dentist and don't anticipate the doctor giving me new expensive prescriptions, so it's time to do a little Christmas shopping for myself ... without worry about the money since it's "use it or lose it" Razz

Thanks for the EyeBuyDirect link. I always wanted a pair of sports sunglasses but can't afford Oakley prices. The Moritz looks good at $49.95 and will be good for the upcoming winter "snow glare".

I see plenty of new eyeglass options since my purchases early this year. One thing I'd like to say about about online purchases that others may find interesting ... the glasses I purchased at winter's end/early spring of this year have held up just fine. The finish hasn't worn off, the lenses haven't fallen out, etc. I don't think I'll ever go back to a retail store, except maybe to get an idea for frames Laughing

great forum, very information.
I hope to see more reviews in te future on sunglasses with prescription lenses in them Smile i've worn glasses since i was young and always admired those cool looking people wearing sunglasses Surprised

I'm looking to get one of those sunglasses and have my own RX lenses added in. But I'm still thinking as to add tint or not. I'm going to be using it for school and many many hours a day, so im thinking it probably might be weird. Nothing is going to be white, you know what i mean? So ive almost ruled out that option. But I came upon the option of "gradient tinting" and it sounds cool. I mean, what do you think? I'll use the bottom half for school when color is of importance (seeing my surrounding properly).

Anyone tried Gradient tinted glasses/sunglasses?? whats your experience, please post.

Thanks!! Very Happy

p.s. i also considered really low percentage fashion tinting.. but is it kind of a waste.. most people won't notice it and kind of a waste of money...

This reply is months late, but I happened to get a nice gradient NON-prescription pair of sunglasses for free recently. The top is about 60% grey, the bottom fully clear. They look cool!!! I use them frequently in situations other than bright sunlight where I don't have to "see well".

I like the gradient tint and would certainly consider it for a prescription purchase. I have to raise my head (as if looking out of bifocals) to read something because the top is too dark, but that's the only drawback I've seen. Perhaps if they were prescription, I wouldn't have to do that.

My experience with transition lenses has been so-so. They darken to only 60% at most, so you still need prescription sunglasses for bright sunlight. But transitions are handy when you're in lower light, or just walking from your car to the store, etc. Sometimes I'm glad I have them, sometimes I'm annoyed that I must change to sunglasses anyway. I would recommend getting them only with "large" lenses, else you're paying a lot of money for nothing more than fashion tinting.

I don't write reviews at all on my online experience, too lazy...

YOU HAVE TO GET A PAIR FROM THEM!

That is all I am going to say. My eyestrains are gone ever since their rimless hingeless came, and I run on treadmills alot and they don't fall anymore. I play tennis and they don't fall. They don't slip on my nose anymore and it never happened in my entire life. I ordered one pair for $39 with anti-scratch but no anti-reflective coating (because that would cost more and I was just trying out 39dollarglasses.com).

They shipped them to me in NZ within a couple of weeks. I really like the glasses frame and colour, and the frame was the right size for my face.

The frame was twisted when the glasses arrived. I managed to twist it back to straight without anything breaking! However I don't know how strong the frame is and how long it will last.

The quality of the glass on my glasses seemed poor. I cleaned the glasses but they still seemed dirty when I looked through them even though they weren't. I don't think the glass in the frames was made to a good quality or finished properly. However this may just be because I don't have anti-reflection coating on the lenses. The glare I get on my glasses when I wear them is bright and distracting so I will definitely get anti-reflection coating on all my glasses in the future. Also my glasses arrived with several small scratches near the centre of each lens. They aren't too bad, if that was all that was wrong I would be very happy with my glasses. However they are a bit distracting because they are in the centre of the lenses not off to the sides.

I don't know whether the prescription is correct or not for me. I don't like wearing these glasses as much as my old glasses (same prescription) - this may only be because I don't like the absence of an anti-reflection coating on them. I want to have my 39dollar glasses checked by an optometrist to see if they got my prescription correct when making them. When I do that and have the results I will post them in reply to this message.

I am disappointed with the glasses I got from 39dollar glasses. However I may buy from them in the future, give them another chance.

If any of you have had your online glasses checked to see if they were made to the correct prescription - please reply to this post to let me know which online businesses to trust!! Thanks

Latest codes I have are good until March 15th, and February 28th (2007). They can be found at http://www.eyeglassretailerreviews.com/39dollar.htm .

39 Dollar Glasses has been issuing coupon codes for quite some time now. Lately, they've been coming out with new ones as the old ones expire. I'll try to keep on top of the codes as much as possible, but due to time restraints, I can't promise anything. You can check http://www.eyeglassretailerreviews.com/39dollar.htm for the latest codes I have at any given time.

I recently purchased prescription sunglasses from 39dollarglasses.com, and wanted to submit my review.

9/20/2006 placed my order with 39dollarglasses.com. I selected a pair of plastic sunglass frames with polycarbonate lenses, which came to a total of $59.90 with shipping.

9/21/2006 received an email that my glasses were in process.

9/22/2006 received an email that my glasses had shipped.

9/26/2006 my glasses came in the mail. They were packaged inside a hard case inside a bubble mailer envelope. I was very impressed by how quickly they arrived! I should mention that I have a fairly straightforward prescription.

The case is a basic hard sided one, and it comes with a nice microfiber cleaning cloth. The glasses look perfect with no flaws, scratches, or dirt. The prescription is perfect, and I am thrilled with the quality for the price. The frames seem sturdy and the glasses are about the weight and comfort I’d expect. I would say they’re comparable to a $20 pair - but of course, they’re prescription so I can actually SEE!

My only complaints about the glasses are not really specific to 39dollarglasses.com, but I’d like to include them as a reminder to others considering an online glasses purchase.

First, I wish I had spent more time comparing the size of the frames to the size of the nonprescription ones I like and have currently. The size listed on 39dollarglasses.com matches the glasses that I received, but they are smaller than I normally like to wear (completely my fault for not checking, but I would urge others to check this more carefully as it’s hard to tell from a picture). One really nice feature on 39dollarglasses is you can print out the outline of the frame – you could even cut it out and “try it on” if you wanted – so I really have no excuse for not doing this!

Second, these glasses have no curve to them whatsoever. I imagine that’s part of why they are economical and so quick to make, but it surprised me as most sunglasses have at least some curve. I did find other online sites where you can order curved sunglasses, but they are much more expensive.

As for 39dollarglasses, I will definitely purchase from them again. In fact I plan to place an order soon for a spare pair of regular glasses, and maybe another style of sunglasses.

nice review.

can you mention sites where you saw sunglasses with curve?

Never seriously researched sunglasses (don't need em really....plus I wore contacts up till couple years ago, so could wear any ol' pair on top)

But I know that Oakley sells Rx wraps. In addition, they manufacture the lenses. It is quite difficult to properly fit and produce such a non-standard lens. Hence, quite expensive.

However, you may have seen a more-cheaply produced solution, in which the Rx lens "snaps" into the frame. (not actually giving full visual coverage)

I ordered a pair of glasses from this retailer on March 12, and they were delivered within four days, on the 16th.

The glasses were just as good as similar ones I have purchased in the past from major retailers for anywhere from $200 on up (prices paid after insurance discounts).

I paid just $39 for these, including shipping, because I had a $5 off coupon code. (happy05 is the code. Not sure when that expires.)

The metal frames I opted for are very sturdy. The dimensions were just as stated on the website.

There were no scratches on the lenses (I got the clear ones, no tint).

I can see perfectly out of them, despite having an astigmatism, so they must have gotten the prescription correct.

My only regret is not having paid the extra $25 for the antireflective lenses. I got these as a spare, thinking I would wear them only when doing home-improvement projects so as not to risk damaging my primary pair, but wish now that I had paid the extra for the antireflective lenses because I really like them a lot.

I would definitely buy from them again.

Hello all,

I have a very strange story to tell. I recently (3-4 weeks ago) placed 2 separate orders for me and my husband (under different names and different email addresses since they were to be sent to 2 different locations-one West Coast, the other East Coast). They completely screwed that up. My glasses were sent to my husband and his never showed up in either location.

I emailed them to complain about the missing glasses and the shipping mishap. Waited for 2 days and heard nothing. Sent them another email and received a reply within 10 minutes that his glasses would arrive in 5 days.

Today, my husband checks his mail and received a box. He was VERY excited (since I am actually quite happy with my pair). But when he opened the box, it was EMPTY! Completely EMPTY!!! What kind of business sends out empty packages?!?

Has anybody else experienced something similar to this? I was excited and planning to purchase more pairs, but now I'm definitely going somewhere else and would recommend anyone who reads this to do the same and boycott Goggles4U!

after the empty box incident, i emailed goggles4u and they said that the previous frame was no longer available. they asked me to choose a new frame and claimed they would ship it out immendiately. after 2 weeks passed (the original empty box arrived after 1 week), we were fed up and requested a refund. they gave us our refund... but several days later, we received the glasses!

so all in all, a very frustrating experience that was counteracted with a free nice pair of glasses.

BUT we will be trying another site next...

I received an email from Goggles4U offering a 20% discount. Enter code "PEACE" and get 20% off. The email mentioned something about it being valid for only 24 hours, but no specific expiration was mentioned. Try it; it might work for you.

It lowers the price to $20.79 (yup - ordered a pair - impulse purchase Very Happy ).

I'm certain that I saw a post someplace else on the internet that that code has expired. However, you can definitely save an extra 5% off of your purchase when you enter the promo code "arcaro" at the checkout. Best wishes on your purchase! Wink

I just finished emailing info@goggles4u for the second time this week trying to get a response as to what I should do now that my glasses have arrived and the prescription is not correct.

I had an eye-care professional check the glasses for me. He "spotted" them...and showed me that one lense was tilted downward towards the outside, and the other lense was shifted outwards thereby making the PD at least 7mm greater than what was requested on the order form. The prescription was for no-line bifocals.

I tried contacting goggles4u through the customer services section of their website first. A couple of days after that I emailed them directly. Today, another couple of days later, I have just emailed them again.

I'm beginning to get a really bad feeling about this. Especially, after having found some other "review" site where (I'm pretty sure that) 5 of 6 reviewers were extremely dissatisfied with goggles4u.

A low price with good product is a bargain. A low price with bad product is a waste.

I will follow up to this post if they make things right, otherwise assume the worst.

I'm hoping that they live up to their 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Today, I received responses from both Goggles4u and CCNow, whom I had also contacted (and threatened not to pay...I had never done that before in my life, honest.).

Goggles4u claimed that they had sent an earlier email to me. (All I know is that I did not get it).

They apologized profusely, and asked me to pick out some frames (2 of them) so that they could manufacture and send to me one replacement pair of glasses "as soon as possible". (I suspect that the reason for picking out 2 frames is because they do run out of stock and didn't want to have to ask me again for yet another set of frames.)

They also asked me to verify my prescription via my reply email. Which, I did gladly by copying and pasting it from my original CCNow confirmation since it was correct in the first place. (Yes, I did check to make sure).

I even went so far as to highlight the PD which should have been used on the first pair...and requested that they specifically use that PD in the manufacture of the new lenses.

One other thing...I sent a cc to my O.D. of my email to Goggles4u (complete with my prescription), and I sent a copy of that email to the customer service person at CCNow that had helped me out. I figured that it was better to dot all of the i's and cross all of the t's...just in case.

So now we wait...and hope...that all is done correctly. Which is all I ever wanted in the first place. Cross your fingers. I'll let you know what happens...in a few weeks...or possibly more.

I received my replacement pair of glasses in the mail today (surprised that they arrived so quickly) and brought them to the vision center to have the prescription checked out. They seem(ed) to provide much better overall vision than the first pair.

I was told the the left lense might be a little weak, but is still within acceptable tolerances. Also, the PD was measured at 69...still not the 66 which I had explicitly asked for. But, much better than the 73-74 measured on the first pair.

I am able to read with them without any noticeable difficulty.

One more thing. The glasses came with magnetic clip-on sunglasses...which would be great except that the plastic seems to have been stressed and/or somewhat scratched. I don't wear sunglasses much, so it's not a big deal. I might try wearing them while driving sometime, but the scratches do seem to remove some sharpness in details.

Bottom line...this pair while not completely perfect, is acceptable.

Good luck everybody.

No response yet...idk if it's because of the weekend/holiday or they just wanna advoid dealing with the problem Rolling Eyes. But I will add, that the prescription seems to be correct, or pretty close. The frames seem to be pretty nice, for $25 especially...and the coatings are good too. But they just arn't what I had wanted...they are a bit bigger than what I ordered it seems and the lenses are a lot bigger than the ones I originally ordered. Doesn't help that the ones I wanted are sold out now.

Well I received my replacements. It was a prety quick turnaround, much less than what I endured last time. BUT they didn't give me either of the two frames I sent to them again! Again, I got something pretty close to what was listed, but not exact...but they were the right color though. I'm not gonna bother them anymore about it, figure I got two usable pairs of glasses so I'll shut up.

But I'll comment on the them both, which are the titanium ones. I like the bendy frames, first ones I've ever had. Find it nice, think I'll be getting titanium from now on. Frames from them are quality and don't feel cheap.

The lenses on the frameless are perfectly polished, no rough edges...just seems that they drill mounted slighty off so the nose bridge and temples don't line up, not relaly noticeable. The lenses on the semi-frame are ok, didn't cut the exact shape so there's a minor gap in two corners, but they arn't noticeable either and should hold still. And they seemed to goof a little on the bottom exposed edges. They weren't so highly polished as the frameless were and the seemed to have messed up on a corner, almost like they sanded a corner too much. It's minor, but slightly noticeable.

Prescription is right on...and both pairs are identical, I can switch between them with no issues. And they seem to be a tad bit stronger, as they should be, than my old ones I've had for a few years.

I'd order again, guess can't expect too much for $24. I'd give it a 3 outta 5. Customer service was good and they'll work with you, I'll give them that.

ok so I ordered mine around in the beginning of nov and received it last week after a month n half of waiting because for some reason the package got returned.

It was well packaged and all and that's about it.
problems

- I ordered 2 pairs, paid an extra $10 because of my high prescription (7+)
- one pair was ok but the other was NOT thinned. There was a visible different between the 2 glasses when it came to the thickness of the lenses
- both pairs are not really the same strengh. While one was slightly off the other pair was completely off
- I emailed them 3 days ago and have yet to hear from them on how to go about the return policy etc
- holiday season rush/delay?

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and will come back to update this.

Just received my order.

Dates:
ordered: Oct 16
Shipped: Oct 19 (according to CCnow order tracking)
Received: Nov 6

One thing that was odd - CCnow showed a ship date of Oct 19, but the postmark on the box was Nov 2 from Cerritas, CA. I'm guessing that this company manufactures in Pakistan and bulk ships orders to California for shipping to the rest of the US.

Packaging - seems to have gotten cheaper compared to previous reviews. the glasses were wrapped in a microfibre cloth and slipped in a plastic baggie. That was then wrapped in some cotton wadding and dropped into the traditional glasses case with chinese characters printed on the top. That was slipped into a lightweight cardboard box for shipping. Honestly, I wouldn't expect any damage during transit, but the glasses case could end up bent or scratched during shipment.

Quality: Decent - there are some minor fit/finish issues. the corners have very minor gaps, the wire along the bottom (semi-rimless) isn't completely straight, lens not exactly centered in the frame (front to back). All in all for $33 I'm happy. I'll order some sunglasses this winter as well.

As for the prescription: It's pretty good. My optometrist used 1/8 (.125) increments for my Rx and Goggles4u only uses 1/4 (.25) increments, so I had to "fudge" a little. After some adjustments, my vision is pretty good, although my depth perception is completely whacked. I'll have the RX checked and make sure that it's correct, before I make any judgments.

I received the glasses I ordered from Goggles4U today. On the CCNow order status page, I was told the glasses shipped on August 11th. In actuality, they shipped on August 22nd according to the postage sticker and the custom form filled out on my package. I paid $25.00 US dollars for the glasses whereas the custom form says the value is $35.00. I did not have to pay customs but if I had of won the "pay customs lottery" this time round, I would have had to pay more. They shipped from Miami, Florida.

The glasses themselves are the totally rimless kind where there are screws in the lenses. I bought them as a progressive pair of glasses while I am working on improving my vision naturally. Therefore I am okay with the quality of the glasses, but would be thinking they are awfully flimsy for everyday use otherwise. The coatings and the actual prescription seem fine. I think the PD is good as I don't feel any strain.

Overall, I would say I'm happy with this purchase considering the price and what I am using them for. I would highly recommend these as a back-up pair, but don't think they are cut out for heavy usage. Maybe the more expensive frames would be stronger.

P.S. I forgot to add that Goggles4U does not list the arm length on any of the glasses. I took a chance anyways and I think mine are about 140mm when I really need a 135mm. I am going to have to figure out how to adjust these myself, or take them in somewhere and pay a bit for someone else to adjust them.

As most people know, Goggles4u has been shipping from Pakistan. I've just received an update from them, and they are now shipping some orders from their US office as well. I wouldn't guess this will affect most orders much, except that shipping to some areas will probably be quicker.

If anyone receives glasses sent from their US location, I wouldn't mind hearing about your shipping time, whether there is any difference in the packaging, and anything else you might notice Smile

Thanks.

First of all, thank you to the administrator for the site and the forums. I just had cataract surgery which (of course) changed my prescription, so I'm in the market for multiple pairs of eyeglasses.

I have a lot of astigmatism (3.25) in one eye. Zenni charges an extra $9, and some other sites won't even accept my prescription.

There is no mention of astigmatism or extra charges at Goggles4U. Does anyone know if they accept high astigmatism prescriptions, and if there is an extra charge? Thanks.

I inquired, and the reply I got was as follows:

Please let us have the complete prescription and we will let you know if we can produce it or not. We have our own lab where we produce our own custom lenses for very high or difficult prescription.

Their email address is info@goggles4u.com. You'll have to send the full prescription details there to find out for sure.

Let us know how it turns out.

For what it's worth, I have high astigmatism (-3.25) in one eye. No other numbers are "unusual".

I have to check to be sure, but believe this makes Goggles4U the cheapest option for me, a few dollars cheaper than Zenni.

Thanks again for this site; very useful information.

Well, I placed an order for transitions lenses and got the following response:

Dear Client,
This refers to your above order.

Regret to inform you that we can not offer glasses in your prescription in plastic lenses sun sensor gray. We can only offer your prescription in plastic lenses. Please let us know if you would like to accept. Remaining amount will refund back to you.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Too bad, because I really liked the frame. I've had transitions lenses in the past, so it must be something in their setup that cannot manufacture them.

They did get back to me in less than 24 hours, so I can't complain about the timing.

Oh well, I'll just have to look elsewhere ...

I ordered my first pair of glasses from optical4less end of September after reading good reviews. After placing the order, I noticed I had input my prescription details wrongly, got my left and right lens mixed up. I e-mailed optical4less within 10 hours (their website states any changes to be notified within 24hours). They eventually replied to my 3rd e-mail, saying I was too late. I resent my 1st message and they acknowledged they did receive it, but the lab did not accept the amendment although it was within the specified time frame. They asked me to pay another £10, which I reluctantly agreed to do. I then received the glasses after 3 weeks, but noticed the lenses had not been cut to fit the frame properly. There was a significant gap between the lens and the frame on both sides, worse on the right lens because I could slot a piece of paper through. I mailed optical 4less and received a response from Fiona, who asked me to take photos so she could show them to the lab people. I did so accordingly, then Fiona asked me to send the glasses back to them. I sent the packet by registered mail, which should take maximum 10 working days. Although I kept chasing to see if they had received them back, Fiona only eventually confirmed a week after they arrived. So now I am assuming my glasses will be repaired and I have been chasing since 1st November, but to no avail. They have had my glasses back for over 2 months and I have not had a single response to my numerous e-mails. The last 2 e-mails I sent have requested a refund seeing that the glasses were faulty and they claim to provide a 30-day guarantee. I am fighting a losing battle as they already have my money so do not care. Mad Crying or Very sad

PostPosted: Fri Aug 18, 2006 1:31 amAug 18, 2006    Post subject: Frustrating experience - very disappointed with O4L

After all the great, glowing reviews about O4L, I decided to order a pair of glasses with them, and it's been an extremely frustrating experience.

In short, it is now over 2 months and I have yet to receive a pair of glasses that I can use!

The long story is this: I ordered a pair of glasses w/plastic frames, and paid the extra $35 for the lenses since my prescription is quite high. (I basically paid $64 for my pair of glasses.)

I received a pair within 2 weeks that looked very nicely constructed, and I was pleased with them, until I started to try to wear the glasses. They gave me headaches each time I tried to wear them, and emailed their customer service. We ended up emailing back and forth for about a week until it was determined that my glasses were made with the wrong prescription!

At this point, they offered to make me a new pair since it was their error. Two weeks later - still no glasses so I contacted their customer service again. I was assured that they were made and that they had already been mailed to me, but this time they did not send via registered mail so the package could not be tracked.

Another two weeks later, I still had not received the glasses, so I emailed customer service again and told them that it had been over a month since I was told a 2nd pair was being made, and about 2 months since I placed my order and PAID for the order, and have yet to receive a wearable pair of glasses from O4L. This was a week ago, and I have not received ANY REPLY from O4L. It seems they ignored my email.

At this point, I don't know if I will ever get a pair of glasses from them of my correct prescription, but I am sure I will never order from O4L again and strongly advise people to NOT order from them. If they send you a correct prescription the 1st time around, then you're lucky, but if they have made any mistake, it's a NIGHTMARE.

Hmm, I'm not really registered on many forums, I only registered here because I was (still am) so frustrated. To date, I have not received a replacement pair.

I did however, email their customer service again and basically the lady I was talking to in the past (about the wrong prescription and getting a replacement) seems to have completely forgotten about my situation, so I had to re-state the problem to her - took about a week of emailing back and forth to clarify this issue. Anyway, she told me exactly the same thing as before, that they made a replacement pair and sent it to me. But here it is, September now, and I still don't have this so-called "replacement pair". I just don't know what to do. I want my money back, and I've since ordered glassed from Goggles4U, and at least those arrived in satisfactory time and are the correct prescription.

Okay, my final update to this thread.

I emailed O4L a week ago telling them the glasses still haven't arrived, and at what point would they consider them lost in the mail?

Their reply was that they do consider them lost after 2 months, but it is not their problem that the post service lost them.

To say I am extremely disappointed with O4L is an understatement. I am furious that I paid them $65 for glasses and have not much (frames?) to show for it.

Just received my glasses from optical4less and I'm really pleased with the quality and speed. Order placed on Sep 28 and received after 12 days.
My transitional progressive glasses are excellent and lenses surpass my expectation as i though they would be thick but are very light and nice to wear.I just have to get used to them as first time for progressive spectacles, but with also being a sun spectacle outside lens clear indoors they are great.

Out of all the retailers reviewed in this site, this is the only retailer that offers this feature. Supposely, this blocks ELF/VLF radiation, is this any good for my eyes? Has anyone ordered a pair with this coating? Or is this just a way to rake in more money?

Thanks

Yes they do work but they are only useful if you spend a lot of time in front of a Normal CRT computer Monitor or close to a TV. If you have a LCD Monitor it is a waste of time adding this extra coating as LCD Monitors put out very little Radiation. I have only found two internet sites that offer this coating and none of my local optometrists offer this coating. Normally if you can find a Optometrist/Store that offers this coating you would be looking at $100-$300 extra, so O4L have a good deal at only $29. Basically being close to a CRT Monitor exposes your eyes to a lot of Radiation which can lead to eyesight problems. Most people buy a anti-glare and anti radiation screen to put on front of there monitor to stop the harmful radiation and the glare. They are $5 each in NZ.

Thought I would add my recent experience using Optical4Less.
I ordered a pair of black plastic glasses (P083 Black) with a grey tint as I wanted sunglasses mainly for driving. Order was placed on 30 May 2006 via the website with no problems. I quickly got an accurate conirmation of my order via e-mail. I also go a link to a web page where I could see the status of my order.

I noticed that they recommended between 5-8 days for manufacture of lenses and and additional 3-4 days for tinting so I didn't expect anything too soon. However, on 5 June 2006 I noticed that the order status had changed to shipped! Three days later the glasses arrived!

BUT, oh dear. I received the correct frames, but the lenses had no prescription applied and had no tint! They had just shipped the frames! This was the weekend and so I sent an e-mail to the customer service account. On Monday I got a reply back saying that they had sent two pairs: one was just the frames and the second was another frame with my lenses! And on 12 June the second pair arrived.

I am still a bit confused about what happened to my order. Because there was only four days between the arrival of the two pairs, I can only assume that they sent the first pair then quickly realized the mistake and made a second pair which they then shipped before telling me.

As described by the others, glasses arived in a hard plastic case inside a carboard box. The lenses were wrapped in lens cloth then wrapped in bubble wrap. The glasses were firmly held in the box. Seemed adequate protection.

The lens prescription is not perfect, but it is certainly good enough. My prescription is quite low so I don't know how someone with a stronger prescription would fair. The quality of the lenses appears to be fine and the frame quality is good and sturdy, although it is a little wide.

Overall impression: good. There was a mix up with the order and their customer service was quick to resolve and followed up to make sure I received the second pair. And as mentioned the overall quality is good and is certainly well worth the price. I would certainly use them again and I think I would recommend them to others too.

Ok, time for some feedback on Optical4Less. Order from there a little over 2 weeks ago, received an email about 1 week later that the glasses had, received them about a week after that. I was quite surprised at how quickly they got here (WI) from Hong Kong.

First impressions were pretty good. Came with 2 cleaning cloths and a case. The case isn't that great, (same with Zenni, I forgot to mention that), but the case isn't very important to me. I have several left over from the years of buying $300 glasses. And if I am only paying $40-80 for glasses, I'd rather the money spend on them then a good carrying case. Anyway, I ordered rimless, Hi Index 1.67 lenses. The total was around $77. The lenses are polished very clear which is kind of nice, makes them even less noticeable while wearing them (to others, not me). The frame I ordered feels very stury and strong. The glasses are pretty light, and the 1.67 hi index lens is noticably thinner than the 1.59 that others sites have (like Zenni Optical). However, I am not sure if they are that much thinner that it is a neccessity to order them, though if your prescription is too high you may not have a choice. The presciption is accurate to what I gave them, though I am suspicious of getting a bad prescription from the Dr, so I am getting that doubled checked this weekend. I seem to be able to see just as well if not better with my older glasses, so I am afraid they increased my prescription with one eye unneccessarily. If I find that out to be true I will most likely order another pair from Optical4less. It was a pretty good buying experience and I am happy with the glasses. For now this site comes highly recommended from me.

It's great to have site like this, it's very hard to find information online for eyeglass retailers and this site has helped immensely. Time for me to try to contribute and help this site grow hopefully.

Purchased from Zenni about a month ago. The customer service wasn't anything to special, received an email that the order was placed and the orders are sent with in a few days of being placed. I don't believe I heard from them again after, but the glasses arrived 2 weeks later, about what I expected. Upon first inspection the glasses looked good, very light. They were rimless. The frame arms feel verry flimsy, but not a big deal to me as I am usually pretty easy on glasses and am not worried about breaking them, and they are light. I have a higher perscription in one eye(of which I am afraid the Dr changed in my last checkup and that it really shouldn't have). The lens thickness was the same as what I had on my retail store pair that I paid a couple hundreds of dollars for.

The lenses looked good. No scratches. Clean easily. I did have to pay an extra $9 for the higher perscription. I did take them in to get them checked and I found out the other lens was overpowered by -.25. Not a really big deal, for $45 I won't complain much. I bought another pair from another site (Optical4less) that will probably be my main pair and these will be a backup. If I do find out this weekend that I got a bad prescription from my last check up I will reorder from the other site but probably will not reorder from here as I will then already have 2 passable backup pairs, even tho new ones from here would only be $36. For the price and from my experience I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site for now, and will probably order from here again in the future. However I will probably use Optical4less for my main glasses, this site will be for backups or sunglasses.

Did you have the optical4less glasses checked also to see if they made them to your prescription? I ordered 2 pairs of Zenni optical glasses. Both seem somewhat different from my prescription (things are a bit blurry at a small distance when they shouldn't be). I don't feel comfortable wearing them if they are not the right prescription for me because I get headaches a lot - its important that my glasses are accurate. But the frames were nice, the anti-reflection coating was good and overall the glass and the frames were good quality. I might order from here in the future, but I think I will try optical4less first.

As I am in the hunt for some new prescription sunglasses I happened across this website and forum. Really useful stuff. Thanks!

But thought I would mention that I found the Zenni Optical website to be extremely slow. So slow in fact that as a potential customer it is putting me off.

Zenni now has $3.95 polarized clip-on 80%-gray-tint sunshades available for all their glasses. These are claimed to be elegant, very lightweight, and non-dorky; they pick a size, from eight available, that roughly matches the glasses you order. Has anyone here tried them? Any pictures?

The $2.95 clip-ons that Zenni used to sell and that they described as dorky weren't polarized. I got a some and found that they were heavy and so not very comfortable to wear. By contrast, I find their polarized magnetic clip-ons (+Sunshade Models) to be lightweight and very comfortable; while they exactly match the glasses you order, they aren't available for all glasses, as these new ones are.

I ordered a pair of glasses from Zenni just yesterday. While researching what to order, I had no problem picking a rimless frame, but initially had difficulty choosing a lens size. The information about lens size wasn't clear.

That's changed. Now, they offer about 20 different lens sizes, giving you the exact dimensions of each and a picture of what shape they are. It makes picking a lens shape much easier; for me it became a "no brainer" as I knew exactly what size/shape I wanted.

Seller "eyeglassfactoryoutlet" offers some different frames on eBay than on their website. They are currently offering some "one of a kind" and "vintage" frames, including designer frames.

Bidding seems to start at $9.50 for all frames. They state that their charge for prescription lenses is less than other discount operations, but don't give any specific prices.

I had my eyes examined at EyeGlassWorld a few days ago. For 3 days I got the run-around with regard to my prescription and lenses. The tech read my glasses wrong, the Optometrist prescribed the wrong power for the bifocals as well as the contacts. On the third day, after more of a run-around, I requested a full refund of over $300. They wouldn't refund the cost of the exam, even though the prescription had been changed 3 or 4 times and several mistakes were made with regard to the strength. I don't think anyone remembered what was supposed to be on the prescription. In the end, they handed me a prescription with a strength for contacts that had been determined to be incorrect along with a prescription for the glasses that did not work for me the first time around.

Even though I'm out the $80 for the exam, I felt it was time to cut my losses and go elsewhere. Had I waited to get the second glasses, I was afraid they would still be incorrectly prescribed and I'd had an even longer wait for glasses. I didn't mention the horrible job done at their lab for the first glasses.

They may advertise a certain price and may even chase you out to your car because the "manager" heard you were having such difficulty and wanted to give you the best deal you can find anywhere. They smile widely as they sink their teeth into your wallet.

After they agreed to a refund (minus the exam), the door was literally slammed into my arm on the way out. I would have filed charges against the employee but that would have meant another $20 for the warrant, not to mention extending an already horrible experience.

I've condensed the entire 3 days but there were many several other problems related to miscommunication between the eye doctor, technicians, sales persons and lab.

Never Again will I go to this type of place for my vision needs. Crying or Very sad

An individual sent me an email asking to post their experience in the forums. They sent the following:

Quote:
I cannot recommend Selectspecs. My glasses came on time and the price seemed right. However, upon opening the packaging, there was a very strong, offensive chemical odor accompanying the glasses. I ‘aired them out’ for two days, but could still smell them across three rooms in an open air apartment. I must say that after 2-3 days, the airborne odor had diminished some. But later, after wearing the glasses for about an hour, the odor was on my skin and hair. Since there is only a 7-day time for returns, I emailed the problem and returned the glasses, asking the company to check for toxic paint: this company ships direct from Hong Kong, so I worried about China’s record for substituting toxic chemicals in order to hold down costs. Otherwise, I asked them to replace the glasses as defective OR to return them to me with a full disclosure on the chemicals used in the preparation of the lenses. I suspect the photo-chromatic coating was the source of the odor. I got no satisfaction on any request. The customer service was borderline polite and stonewalled reasonable efforts to get what I had ordered. They came out ahead, keeping over $90 for which I have nothing to show for.

Try a different online company, my husband did and he got two great pairs of glasses stateside.

Mad

Ordered and paid for my glasses on 28th May and waited until 14th July to receive them from Selectspecs.

In the meantime they have been most unhelpful bordering on rude to me.

My glasses are Miss Sixty so I have had at least 10 people comment on them and ask where I got them and I told them not to buy from Selectspecs.

Hope they are happy that by treating me the way they have they will lose business from anyone who asks me.

I found this forum before I purchased my online glasses and therefore wanted to add my reviews too. I bought two pairs, one of which was from SelectSpecs.

They took 16 days to arrive in Canada after placing my order. Not too shabby and in line with what others seem to be waiting.

I paid $38.00 Canadian and of course it comes with all the coatings. The frames are your basic plastic lens which you can find in any spectacle store. I would have had to pay about $170.00 more to get them in a hour around here. The prescription is perfect and the lenses and frames are fine.

I will only be wearing them to watch TV or drive, so I am extremely pleased with the glasses and would not hesitate to buy again.

I also like that you have to sign for the glasses. SelectSpecs states on their website that they are responsible for the glasses until you sign for them. This means if they go missing in the mail, you will not have to cut your losses.

The order status did not change on the website for me and they predicted weeks longer than it actually took. I received an invoice on the day that it had shipped telling to expect the glasses within 5 to 10 days and I received them 5 days later. Monday shipped, Friday received.

Just wanted to update this site with the results of our latest purchase. I wanted to buy another pair and I convinced (or rather wore down) my husband to get a pair for himself.

The first pair I bought were plastic frames, but we went metal and semi-rimless this time. Wow...these glasses do not look cheap. Maybe the $500.00 pairs I've seen in the windows of the high-end frame stores might be a bit better, sure, but for the difference in price, you could get a new pair a year for the next 10 years from SelectSpecs and still be ahead of the game in my opinion.

I was leery that perhaps I just lucked out on my first order, but if anything, the second order was even better. They handled two different prescriptions beautifully and they were shipped out a week later and arrived to me from start to finish (England to Canada) in just 15 days.

Purchase with no fear I say.

I've been trying to reach SpecsOnTheNet since the 20th, but all my messages to them keep bouncing, saying:

The glasses I'm interested in are several hundred dollars, and I have no intention of buying them if I can't even type with the people at SpecsOnTheNet. I've done a WHOIS on both specsonthenet.com and focusfix.com looking for addresses on another domain I might use, but no such luck. Has anyone got a suggested alternative email address? I haven't been able to find the glasses I'm looking for elsewhere.

Oh, wait: better idea! The glasses I'm interested in are "Trend Occhiali DX13." If you know of another online retailer who carries them, then the hell with SpecsOnTheNet and their stupid mail server. If I can't get through to them, I can go around them! If I can give my money to someone else, someone who's paying attention to customer support, that'd be tres cool!

Thanks for any tips!

Hi! Whew! I'm glad I found this forum and EyeglassRetailerReviews.com - b/c I was about to order a set of glasses (actually 2 sets!) from VALUEglasses.com
Needless to say I did not thanks to this site and forum.
My only other question - has anyone tried to contact the appropriate authorities? I hate to see people getting ripped off...we all work hard for what we do and try to be cost conscious consumers - but that's no reason to get ripped off...

Anyways - thanks to all and to the site master of EyeglassRetailerReviews.com

I've got some glasses coming from Goggles4U so I definitely want to contribute a review when my glasses come in!
Thanks!

After waiting 6 weeks for my glasses, I disputed the charge with my credit card company. I sent them a copy of my order confirmation, copies of emails sent to ValueGlasses (no reply received), and the phone numbers I tried to call (which were not in service).

I received an immediate response saying something like 'we've credited your account ... but may reverse this based upon a response from the merchant'.

So, I'm in "wait and see" mode. I don't want to buy more glasses until I'm sure the refund is definite.

It's a shame. I really liked the frame/lens combo I'd ordered. Oh well, maybe I'll find something better elsewhere.

If you paid by credit card or PayPal, file a complaint. I've done this a few times (mostly eBay + PayPal) over the past few years, and got my money back every time but one (when PayPal found in my favor, but since the seller's account was empty PayPal couldn't refund my money).

If you paid by check or money order, I don't have any suggestions.

I have the same problem as you: 5 weeks, no glasses, and no contact from the seller. What number do you have to call? I've tried the following numbers; both were out-of-service on Friday afternoon: (818) 232-7427 and (818) 268-8068.

The delay doesn't bother me, but being unable to contact the seller does. ValueGlasses, are you listening? People are going to see all these complaints and choose to buy elsewhere.

Hey jps, Thanks for your info. I paid by credit card and I just called my bank they say I can file for Fraud. Then I can get back my credits and they will go after the company. Well hope it's true.

I called all the numbers listed on their web and also the number shown on my credit card bill but nobody ever answered. Losing 40 dollars is not my major concern but I'm afraid the company will use my credit card info in illegal ways.

Anyways, keep me posted on when you get the glasses. I'll let you know if I get mine.

March 13: placed order Smile

April 14: sent polite email asking for approximate delivery date - received no reply Confused

April 21: different phone numbers appear on my order confirmation email and their website - called both and found they are "no longer in service" Mad

I know ValueGlasses is still in business; they continue to sell on eBay. Their feedback has been pretty poor lately, however.

Looks like I'll be filing a complaint with my credit card company. The bad thing is that I'm "stuck in a holding pattern" until either:
a) I get my glasses, or
b) I get confirmation that the charge has been reversed

Evil or Very Mad BEWARD if you are going to order from this company. I ordered in december and was told 10 days, that came and went, then finally after 3 attempts to contact them, they finally contacted me back. I was promised a free 2nd pair of glasses for my wait time. The next 10 days came and went!! Now i can't get ahold of anyone, their phone # box is always full so you can't leave a message and they don't answer your emails. I am thankful that i paid with paypal, because they finally reembursed me my money. So if you really need glasses, avoid this site!!!!!!!!! Idea

Sorry to hear of your difficulty. I just had cataract surgery and need new glasses desparately, so I went to Lenscrafters (and I don't even want to THINK about how much they whacked me for lenses alone). Once I'm satisfied that my new prescription is OK (read on), I'll be purchasing more pairs online.

Going to a local retailer is no guarantee of quality, however. I got my lenses, and still uncomfortable with them 4 days later, went back and had them check them. I was told "they're three degrees off, which isn't much, but is enough to notice". So, I have to wait another week for more lenses. I hope they'll be better; if not, I'll have to go back to my doctor to figure out what's going on.

At least I've got one eye seeing 20/20 Smile

Wish I'd found this site before I ordered. I also cannot get any response from them. Ordered 23 march and got quick confirmation of the order (and charge to my credit card). After 12 days with no further information, I started trying to reach them. No answer to emails, phone sounds like it is a fax.

I'm going to wait until I actually receive my CC bill; if I still haven't received, will get the CC company to deal with them.

Agree with the BEWARE warning, though I'm slightly heartened by the post from the person who received theirs in mid March.

I just got my glasses from valueglasses. It took about a month, but it finally arrived. I thought I would get my glasses in 10-15 days (as it says in the order confirmation email), but I think that since I ordered high-index 1.67 lenses it took much longer. Anyways, I'm just glad I got the glasses I ordered. It was the best price I could find for 1.67 lenses with the frames I wanted. Total price was about $75, which is almost equal to what some places charge for second-rate AR coating alone.

The quality of the glasses are very good. I bought these as a backup pair to my overpriced lindbergh rim titanium glasses that cost me $400 online, but these glasses I just got are very well made. True, I just got them, but I'm very impressed with the build quality from what I can tell. I actually see better with these glasses (same prescription as the more expensive pair), maybe it's just the shape of the frame? In any case, I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. I just wish valueglasses would've kept me in the loop about the processing time for my particular glasses/frame combo.

ValueGlasses sells A FEW of their frames on eBay, offering A FEW in Rx, at lower prices than their website.

Not many are offered, but check before you order through the website. The best deal seems to be $29.98 + $7.95 shipping for single-vision lenses with your choice of tinting or premium AR coating. Allowable prescriptions are Sphere up to 10 and Cylinder up to 2.

I discovered this while researching the seller prior to ordering. I can't take advantage since my prescription is "out of range" and I want transitions, so I just ordered through the website ($109.96 for transitions and premium AR - still a satisfactory price if the quality is good). I'll submit a review when I receive my glasses.

To find their eBay offerings: do an "advanced search", select "items by seller", and enter "valueglasses".

This site offers hi-index 1.61 as super thin lenses free, and more than 1000 frames, some of the frames really nice. the total price also very low, about 25 pounds you can already buy very nice glasses.

I recently ordered from greateyeglasses.com and it took about 10 days to get my glasses. I was impressed. They are no better or no worse than any glasses I've purchses for 3 or 4 times.

I did a test on a cheap $14.99 pair and because they were cool, my wife just ordered a few.

I highly recommend.

Crying or Very sad
I bought these glasses at LBW Eyewear on Jan 17, 2007.

1 WR058 Rimless Stainless Steel Frame @ $ 40.85=$ 40.85
PD=64, OSsphere=-2.25, OScylinder=-0.25, OSaxis=30, ODsphere=-1.75, ODcylinder=-0.75, ODaxis=99, LensType=1.59 Poly Carb Lenses (+ $ 9.95), LensTint=No Sun Tint Selected, FrameColor=Gun Metal Colored Frame, ARCoating=AR Coating (+ $ 4.95)

Subtotal: $ 40.85
Taxes: $ 0.00
Shipping: $ 6.50 (USPS First Class)
------------------------------------------
Total: $ 47.35

After one of the lenses shattered, I had them checked out by Pearl Vision and was told the lenses are cheap plastic. The lenses were to be Poly-carbon. LBW Eyewear refuses to admit they shipped cheap lenses. No replacement, no communication, stay away from this outfit.

Has anyone done business with framesdirect.com.?
The reviews on resellerratings.com are all very positive.
The site has a Frame Finder virtual try-on program in which you can upload your own photo and then see how frames any of their thousands of frames look on you.

I liked the virtual try-on, until I realized my face was too small for the frames. The size frame that looked good in a store was 6-8 mm larger on my virtual face. Be sure of your size before ordering from anyone.

Re: choosing a frame/lens

I've ordered and received 3 pairs online so far. The frame/lens were exactly what I wanted in all cases, so I must be doing something right Laughing. Here's my story:

When I started looking online, I had no idea what size frame/lens to order. I just knew that I look best in a rectangular-shape lens.

First, I learned to read the printing on the inside of my old frames. For example, my "newest" pair says 53-18-150. That means the lens width is 53mm, the bridge is 18mm, and the temple length is 150mm.

The temple length of 150mm is larger than most found online. But since the ear pieces were bent at almost a right angle to fit me, I knew I could go down to about 135mm safely.

Looking at the last few pairs I'd purchased, I found that the smallest lens width was 50, and this was also the pair I liked the least. So, I immediately restricted my search to lens widths of 50+, preferably higher.

Lens height isn't printed on the frame (at least it wasn't on any of mine). To determine lens height, I downloaded and printed the "measuring your pupillary distand" PDF from 39dollarglasses.com. There is a 150mm "ruler" inside that you can use to measure lens height. NOTE: If your frame has no information printed inside, you can use this ruler to determine your lens height and width, and to estimate the temple length. I found that the lens height on my "newest" pair was 28mm. One "old" pair I have where I felt the lens height was "too small" measured 24mm.

Now, I had all the information I needed: I want rectangular lenses, width low to mid 50's, height in the high 20's, a temple length of 135-150mm, and a bridge of about 18mm. For sunglasses or transition lenses, larger lenses are better.

Anyone know anything about this retailer? When I google for various glasses related text, then I see a lot hits related to this site, but all adverts and PR. I can't find a review anywhere, although they do have a lot of testimonials and the press releases on their site.

Someone sent me an email me a couple weeks ago asking about them, so I'll paste what I replied to them.

I did a little searching, but there seems to be very info about them available. This WHOIS info about their domain is as follows:

Domain servers in listed order:
YNS1.YAHOO.COM
YNS2.YAHOO.COM

As you can see, the registrant appears to be from Israel, where I'm guessing the company must be based (despite Bethesda, MD 20814 being shown on their contact page, possibly a US office). They registered their domain for 10 years, which is usually a good sign but the domain is still quite new. The testimonials and first "press release" on their web site are all dated February/2005 which seems a little strange, since the domain shows creation in August/2005. Either they transferred registrars and ended up with a new "created" date, or they're trying to make it look as though they've been around for longer than they really have.

I tried searching the BBB, but there doesn't seem to be any information about them there. I also wasn't able to find any forums or newsgroups where anyone had mentioned having any sort of experiences with them.

Ordering from eyebuydirect.com would probably be a little risky, for the simple reason that you'd probably be one of the first people placing an online order from them. They could be a great company, or they could be terrible, and there's really no way to know without hearing the experiences of others, which won't happen until they've had the time to develop a customer base.

If you do decide to order from them, I'd suggest contacting them first and asking some sort of a question (even if it's as simple as "how much would shipping be to Canada"). That will at least give you an idea as to their response time, and might possibly give you a hint as to the level of customer service.

If you really like the frames you're considering, then it may be worth giving them a try. Just make sure, as with all online purchases, that you don't spend more than you can afford to lose if things go sour.

So far, I haven't heard anything at all about EyeBuyDirect.com aside from the one inquiry, in addition to your post here.

As far as "testimonials" and "press releases" go, I probably wouldn't put a heck of a lot of weight into them, since they can be faked with relative ease. There's rarely ever a way to know for sure, so I usually tend to ignore them and rely more-so on word-of-mouth (if someone has a bad experience, it often doesn't take long for them to find a forum or other avenue to tell others about it). Your best bet is probably to wait and see what experiences others do have. Unfortunately, EyeBuyDirect being relatively new, it might take a little while.

Be sure to let us know how things go if you do try them out.

Dear friends,

My name is Roy Hessel. I do own the domain and am currently the Chief Operating Officer of EyeBuyDirect Inc. The company has been established and operating since 1995, in Bethesda Maryland. I appreciate the genuine interest in our company, and I would like to assure you that the feedbacks and testimonials on our site are 100% genuine. At EyeBuyDirect.com, we are making our best efforts to truly revolutionize the eyewear market and to allow everyone to own one or several pairs of glasses at reasonable prices--unlike what's customary in the industry. Yes we are a relatively new online store, but our expertise is draws from over 20 years in eyeglasses retail. In a relatively short time we have been successful in serving thousands of satisfied customers. We hope you will be one of them; see for your self.

I ordered from this company and now I'm afraid I might have made a mistake. According to their website, your order should arrive within 10 days, well mine hasn't. It's been well over 10 days and nothing yet. $56.80 might not be a lot to some people, but when you're on a tight budget, it's a lot. I sent an e-mail to Mr. Hessel regarding my lack of satisfaction just a few minutes ago. I'll keep you posted on the results.

Well, it's June 6th and I still don't have the eyeglasses I ordered on may 18th. Also, I have not gotten a response from any person at eyebuydirect.com I'll say that's poor customer service. I sent them another e-mail a few minutes ago. See what happens.

Very dissatisfied!

I made my first order from that site at march, was positivelly surprised by the service & quality of the product ( I made small order just in case...)

and then order 3 glasses more, one as a present.
Im highly satisfied! recommended to some friends, and here around I know about 2 more people that ordered and go their prescription eyeglasses.

so as to me - I dont need more eyeglasses in the near future, but would have bought from eyebuydirect for sure if I needed.

This site offers hi-index 1.61 as super thin lenses free, and more than 1000 frames, some of the frames really nice. the total price also very low, about 25 pounds you can already buy very nice glasses.

They offer the free super thin 1.61 lenses, spexmaniac offer free super thin lenses as well, but their frame not so beautiful, and the style of frame of glassescrafter.com quite nice, not so expensive when considering price, style and lenses together, I have compared several online store and find this one is the most impressive.

and most online store claim theire price as 10 pounds or 15 pounds, but in fact when you choose a decent frame, in most cases, the price will be over £25, and after you set lenses to your frame, another 20-30 pounds will be added. But at Glassescrafter.com , you can buy a fashionable glasses with super thin lenses at the price of £25 only. That's the most important, no extra money on lenses, and frames look nice.

While I wait for Lenscrafters to grind my lenses properly (I hope) so I can verify my new prescription is OK, I continue to look for on-line sites and figure out what I'm going to order.

This morning, I ran across globaleyeglasses.com. Based in USA (adress in Georgia, a couple of photographs of their facility), frame+lens+USA shipping starts at $20. This is, of course, for "bare bones" eyeglasses. Scratch coat, anti-glare, tinting, etc. are all extra. No extra charge for high astigmatism (I have -3.25 in one eye, so this is something I look for).

The web site seems incomplete. There are a few broken links. Frame selection is limited. But I'm considering a plastic frame as backup Rx sunglasses, and what they have might fit the bill.

My biggest complaint is their lack of lens height information. It's hard to judge from a picture alone; give me the numbers and I know what's being offered.

Ran across a new one while playing around tonight ... myopticalshop.com. Didn't have time to look at it in detail; here's some basic info:

- Prices are in dollars and euros, and there is mention of customs fees, so I assume their production facilities are outside the USA.
- Smaller selection than other sites, but what's there looks good.
- Prices seem to be about the same as 39dollareyeglasses, at least at first glance.
- Large selection of lens sizes for rimless eyeglasses, and the selection process is much easier then Zenni's.
